Why Support RECYCLAMATION Thrift

Recyclamation Thrift is being built as a local, community-centered space for affordable goods, creative reuse, and skill-sharing. Support at any level helps cover startup costs, operating expenses, and programming that keeps the space accessible to everyone.

HELP Give RECYCLAMATION Thrift a Permanent Home in Windsor, NC

WHAT WE'RE DOING
Windsor hasn’t had a thrift store for more than a year. For some people, that means longer drives and fewer choices. For others, it means losing access to affordable clothing and household goods altogether. RECYCLAMATION Thrift is being built to help fill that gap – not by recreating what was lost, but by creating something new, warm, and genuinely useful for this town.

We are at a real, concrete moment right now: We signed the lease for a permanent space on January 16 and we are working toward an anticipated Grand Opening on February 11.

This short campaign helps cover the up-front costs of opening and setting up the store so all the generous donations we’ve received finally have a place where they can do some real good.

Every contribution helps move the store closer to opening, whether it's a small gift or a larger one.

If you want to help, there are three straightforward ways: (1) contribute financially if you’re able, (2) share the campaign, or (3) follow along and help spread the word. Any way you choose to support us matters – whether you’re local or not, you’ve already helped, or you choose to do so with this campaign.

HOW RECYCLAMATION CAME ABOUT
I’m a relative newcomer to Windsor. My husband Mickey and I moved here a little more than three years ago from Phoenix, where thrifting was everywhere. There were multiple thrift stores within a few miles of my house, and I visited them regularly. It was part hobby, part routine, always my way to help keep things out of the landfill longer.

So when I learned that tiny Windsor had a thrift store, I was thrilled. The hours were irregular and the selection was obviously smaller than what I’d been used to – but we had one.

And then it closed.

For me, that meant losing something familiar and enjoyable. For others, it meant losing access. That difference matters, and it’s part of why RECYCLAMATION exists.

I’m opening RECYCLAMATION Thrift to help fill the space the Opportunity Shop left when it closed – not by recreating it, but by building something that serves Windsor in its own way. RECYCLAMATION is a thrift store at its core: a place to shop for useful, affordable, interesting things, welcoming people who love to thrift as well as those who rely on thrifting out of necessity.

Over time, it’s also meant to be a gathering place – a space where classes, vendor markets, and small events can happen gradually, as the store grows into them. At its heart, it’s meant to feel warm, welcoming, and alive.

WHERE WE ARE AT THIS MOMENT
Right now, there are no store shelves yet. There are rented trailers. There are rooms in my house full of boxes and bags of donated goods stacked wherever they’ll fit. Everything is waiting for a place to land. And even before there’s a permanent home, the idea has already started working.

We’ve been testing RECYCLAMATION through pop-ups, and the response has been more generous than we ever could have expected. People have donated high-quality goods. Others have offered hands-on help. And some have chosen to support the project financially in quiet, practical ways.

Without planning it this way, something remarkable began to happen. Cash supporters quietly covered purchases so neighbors who needed clothes or household items could take them home without worry before the holidays. Donated goods are making the store possible. Transportation and connections are making access possible.

That moment made something very clear to us: this isn’t just an idea anymore. It’s momentum.

RECYCLAMATION Thrift is being built as a sustainable, community-rooted business – one that can keep its doors open, adapt over time, and continue serving Windsor without depending on constant emergency appeals. From the beginning, it’s also been designed to give back in a structured, intentional way.

RECYCLAMATION is here and we are already visible – even having a space on the row where Windsor businesses contributed to the town’s Christmas light display. Here's our sign (recycled, of course!) during the daylight.

GOALS FOR RECYCLAMATION
RECYCLAMATION Thrift is being built as a sustainable, community-rooted business – one that can keep its doors open, adapt over time, and continue serving Windsor without depending on constant emergency appeals.

From the beginning, it’s also been designed to give back in a structured, intentional way. We’ve created a three-year cycle of nonprofit partners. Each year, a portion of proceeds will support one specific community focus. In the first year, that focus will be the local Humane Society. In years two and three, support will rotate to projects serving senior citizens and art students of any age – groups that often benefit directly from access to affordable goods, creative materials, and practical support.

The space we’re moving into used to be a staffing office. We’re in the process of turning it into something entirely different – bright colors, clearly defined rooms, and shelves full of useful, interesting, and affordable things. A place that feels welcoming, not overwhelming.

The funds raised through this campaign will help cover the upfront costs of opening: a few months’ rent, setup, and the work it takes to turn a former office into a space the community can actually use.

If this feels like something you’d want in your town – or if you believe in giving useful, beautiful, and forgotten things a new life – we’d be grateful for your support.

Thank you for helping give RECYCLAMATION a permanent home.

A signed numbered poster commemorating the opening of RECYCLAMATION – created to mark this moment and the community that made it possible. It’s a small, tangible reminder of a space built with care, creativity, and community. Keep it, frame it, and remember your part in an exciting new chapter for Windsor.

This reward includes a full-color art postcard featuring one of my original collage works. The image is taken directly from my artwork and professionally printed as a keepsake.

Each postcard is a small, tangible thank-you. It is something you can save, gift, or display, representing your role in helping RECYCLAMATION Thrift move from an idea into a permanent home.

Backers at this level will also receive behind-the-scenes project updates as the store comes together.

This reward includes a RECYCLAMATION Thrift t-shirt featuring the project logo. It is a simple, wearable way to show your support and help spread the word as the store moves toward a permanent home.

You will also receive a full-color art postcard printed from one of my original collage works. The postcard is a small keepsake you can save, gift, or display as a reminder that you helped make this project possible.

Backers at this level will also receive a printed 50% off RECYCLAMATION coupon, valid for one item with a retail value of up to $100. Local backers may redeem the coupon in person once the store opens. Non-local backers are welcome to keep it as a keepsake or gift it to someone local. Coupon expires 12/31/2026.

This reward also includes behind-the-scenes project updates as RECYCLAMATION Thrift comes together.

This reward includes a printed copy of The RECYCLAMATION Guide to Thrifting, written from decades of hands-on thrifting experience, not theory or trends.

Rather than offering scavenger-hunt lists or “flip this for profit” advice, the book explains how thrift stores actually function behind the scenes, how items are priced, how restocking and timing affect what you see on the floor, and how to recognize quality and usefulness when it is underpriced.

Readers learn how to scan a store efficiently, assess materials and construction, understand which flaws matter and which do not, and develop price sense based on value, longevity, and real-life use.

The guide is designed for people with limited time, imperfect stores, and normal budgets. It is about making better decisions, finding genuinely good buys, and leaving the store with items that earn their place in your life.

This reward includes a signed printed copy of the book and everything included at the $30 level, including the printed RECYCLAMATION coupon and behind-the-scenes project updates.

This reward includes one 8" x 10" inch full-color art print featuring my original multimedia collage artwork. The image is taken directly from my work and professionally printed as a keepsake.

Backers at this level will also receive a printed copy of The RECYCLAMATION Guide to Thrifting and the printed 50% off RECYCLAMATION coupon included in the $50 level.

In addition, you will be invited to a private video walkthrough of the RECYCLAMATION space before opening. This live session includes a guided tour of the store and a Q and A, offering a closer look at how the space is coming together and how your support helped make it possible.

Backers at this level will continue to receive behind-the-scenes project updates as the store moves toward opening.

At this level, your support will be recognized through a named, themed space inside the RECYCLAMATION Thrift shop. Your name (or the name of someone you choose) will be thoughtfully incorporated into the title of a curated area within the store. These spaces help organize the store and give it personality, warmth, and a sense of intention.

    Examples include:

    • Jack’s Man Cave

    • Natalie’s Closet

    • Cassandra’s Book Nook

Each named space will be clearly labeled in-store as part of the RECYCLAMATION experience and will remain in place for at least two years. This allows the store to evolve over time while still offering meaningful, visible recognition of your support.

Backers at this level will also be invited to a private video walkthrough and live Q&A before the store opens, offering an inside look at the space, the layout, and the thinking behind it.

Includes everything from the $100 level.

    +++

After the campaign ends, I will personally contact you to confirm the details for your named creative nook.

Together, we will confirm the name to be used on the plaque (for example: Cassandra’s Book Nook or Jack’s Man Cave).

Final placement, layout, and design of the plaque will be handled by RECYCLAMATION to ensure consistency within the space. Nook names and plaques will remain in place for at least two years, after which the space may be refreshed or reconfigured as the store evolves.

This reward sponsors one dedicated feature wall inside the RECYCLAMATION Thrift store, recognized with a custom wall plaque that includes your name, your company's name, or the name of someone you choose.

Feature walls anchor the store visually and thematically. They help define the feel of a room, highlight curated collections, or showcase special displays. Your name becomes part of the space people notice, photograph, and remember.

Wall sponsorships remain in place for at least two years, allowing flexibility as the store grows and evolves while still honoring your support in a meaningful, visible way.

You will also be invited to a private video walkthrough of the space with a live Q and A before the store opens.

Includes everything from the $100 level.

    +++

After the campaign ends, I will contact you directly to confirm the details for your sponsored feature wall.

    We will confirm:

    • The name to be displayed on the wall plaque

    • Any brief dedication wording you would like included, within reason

Plaque design, materials, and placement will be handled by RECYCLAMATION to maintain a cohesive look throughout the store. Wall sponsorship recognition will remain in place for at least two years, with flexibility to adapt the space as the store grows and changes.

At this level, you become a Room Patron.

Your support sponsors one complete room within RECYCLAMATION Thrift, identified with a custom plaque featuring your name (or the name of someone you wish to honor). The room will be known as [Name]’s Room for a period of at least two years, allowing flexibility as the store evolves while still offering a substantial and visible recognition of your contribution.

In addition, you will receive a custom, original collage artwork, that I will create specifically for you. This is not a print or reproduction. It is a one-of-a-kind piece made by hand, using Laura's signature collage style.

You will also be invited to a private video walkthrough of the space, with a live Q&A before the store officially opens, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what you helped make possible.

This reward includes everything from the $100 level, including prior perks and invitations.

This level is ideal for those who want to leave a lasting creative mark on the space and directly support the heart of RECYCLAMATION’s vision.

    --

After the campaign ends, we will contact you to confirm details for both your named room and your custom original collage.

    We will confirm:

    • The name to be used for the room plaque

    • Any dedication wording you would like included, within reason

    • A brief creative direction conversation for your custom collage

Room naming and plaque design will be handled by RECYCLAMATION to ensure consistency across the store. Room recognition will remain in place for at least two years, allowing flexibility for future reconfiguration while honoring your support.

Laura will create your custom collage personally and it will be delivered separately.
